Book is clean, tight and bright. Illustrated. What Welles originally wrote differs considerably from what was published in as the Diary of Gideon Welles. The story of the Diary, it's publication, and the changes incorporated into the printed version of fifties years ago is an interesting one.
This is VOLUME Three ONLY. Seller Inventory # E. Gideon Welles's Diary provided much needed insight into the inner workings of the Navy Department and Lincoln's cabinet during the Civil War. As a big Lincoln fan, I particularly enjoyed the subtle hints starting in December when Welles started to mention that Salmon Chase seldom attended the cabinet meetings prior to his resignation in June /5(7).
